2015: The Year Of The Coloured Gemstones

Over the past few years, experts have begun to highlight the fact that coloured gemstones have been growing in demand around the world, and consequently value. Partly down to their popularity on the red carpet with A-List celebrities and the like, gemstone jewellery is definitely on-trend this year! Beyonce, Naomi Watts, Rosamund Pike and Mila Kunis have all been seen wearing rubies, sapphires, emeralds and other gemstones, making them this year's must-have gems.

Is Amethyst Your Gemstone Of The Year?

Thanks to those in the public eye such as the Duchess of Cambridge, whose sapphire and diamond engagement ring has captured the attention of many, gemstone jewellery has increased in popularity. The engagement ring, which was bought for Diana, Princess of Wales, was originally purchased at £28,000 in 1981; now the ring has been valued at a whopping £300,000! 

Bonhams, one of the world's oldest and largest auctioneers of fine art and antiques, have noted that coloured gemstone prices have soared in 2015, going so far as to say that 2015 is 'the year of coloured gemstones'. Whilst diamonds will never lose their classic appeal, especially for engagement rings, coloured gems are enthralling jewellery lovers the world over.

Bonthams have tracked a huge increase in the price per carat achieved for colour gemstones in its auctions over the last decade, and they are consequently a fantastic investment opportunity. Towards the end of 2014, Bonhams sold a pair of Cartier art deco ruby and diamond clip brooches, circa 1930, for £350,500 on a pre-sale estimate of £80,000-120,000.

Likewise, a 21.27 carats sugarloaf cabochon Kashmir sapphire and diamond ring with a pre-sale estimate of £50,000 to £80,000 sold for £290,500, more than three times its estimate. They commented that  "rubies are in most demand and command the strongest prices per carat, followed by Kashmir sapphires and then Burma sapphires and Colombian emeralds."

The David Jerome Collection, which comprises 680 of the rarest and most valuable gemstones, goes on auction this September. Perhaps it's one to watch out for!
