What To Do About Broken Jewellery
Breaking a piece of jewellery is never nice, especially if it's something with sentimental value. Losing an earring is heart breaking for the same reason, but we don't need to throw broken jewellery away – there are loads of things we can do to save the day.
Firstly, in the case of a lost earring, you can check to see if you can purchase a replacement pair. If you can, you'll also have a spare in the event that one should go walkabout again, so this route also protects you against a future loss.
The single earring trend is on permanent rotation in the fashion world, and it's only a matter of time before it comes back strong. There's also the mismatched earring trend, where you wear one statement piece and a complementary, smaller earring on the other side. Single earrings are ideal for this, and you may already have the perfect pieces for a mismatched pair in your jewellery box. Look for pieces with the same colour stone, same type of metal or same theme, to create an odd pair for this trend. If you don't have a match, you're sure to find something in the Amore Argento range to suit.
Stud earrings can also be worn as brooches – use the rubber back from an enamel pin badge to secure the stud post to your clothing. Brooches can look lovely on solid colour backgrounds or scarves, and will elevate a nicely tailored coat into a dress coat for an evening event.
Having jewellery re-made is also an option. Heirloom pieces that get broken can be repaired, or melted down and the stones reset into something you'll love to wear. The repair route is also an option for newer jewellery that gets broken. An option to bear in mind for large pieces is whether several pieces could be made using the various stones – a necklace pendant or brooch can give birth to several rings, or smaller pendants, even a couple of pairs of earrings. This is a lovely thing to do with heirloom jewellery that needs to be shared between several heirs.
Our designers and jewellers love getting to flex their creative muscles, so if you have an idea for a bespoke piece, or you'd love one of our existing designs made with stones from your broken jewellery then do get in touch and let's see what we can make rise from the ashes of your broken bling.
If you're not sentimentally tied to the broken jewellery you can still sell it for the value of the stones and/or gold. Lots of companies buy broken jewellery for the metal weight value, and this is also something some charities accept – you may not want to go to the bother of dealing with a single gold stud, but a charity may be delighted to add it to their pot.
There are also a number of crafts you can do with broken jewellery – the stones can be used to adorn clothing, accessories and other wearable items – perhaps you could bedazzle a hair pin or comb for those fancy up-dos? Maybe a Christmas decoration could be created from pieces of broken jewellery, some fancy buttons and other little bits of finery? Photo frames, mirrors, trinket boxes and many more decorative items can be enhanced with the addition of some jewels and this is a great thing to do with broken costume jewellery where the resale price is low and it's not worth repairing or resetting.
We also think that when you break a piece of jewellery it's a great excuse to treat yourself to something new, so while you mull over what to do with broken bling, have a look through our range and find something that will bring your sparkle back.
