What Would Toyah Willcox Wear?
Toyah Willcox is an icon of the musical and acting worlds, and her style has evolved in step with the period, from the punk look she sported in the late 1970s and 1980s to daring fashions in the 1990s, continuing to this day. She is never afraid of a statement look and her fashion and jewellery collections have ended up in museums and private auctions.
As Toyah starts her Strictly journey, we wondered which of the Amore Argento pieces she would most like to wear. At a public appearance a few years ago Toyah wore a heart shaped pendant that is a great match for our Light Up My Heart necklace. This pretty piece is dotted with different sized cubic stones and creates a lovely shape with the open centre, making it ideal for wearing against a block colour background, as Toyah did with her black top on this occasion.
The heart necklace is a favourite, as it appears in several other photographs of Toyah, both when she's dressed up and when she's dressed down. Paired with the heart necklace she wears a set of pearl studs that look a lot like our Affinity drop earrings. In this versatile pair of earrings oval shaped pearls hang from a post stud mount with two cubic zirconia adorned links between them which provide a lovely movement and sparkle.
Toyah loves a statement necklace; indeed many of her stage outfits make use of jewellery elements like stacks of bangles (very 1980s) and multiple bands around the neck and shoulders. She also appreciates an unusual shape, with at least two pieces taking the same shape as our Red and Multi-coloured Orb necklaces. These pieces have a main chain which hosts two cubic zirconia set in a flush mount and between these, a longer lozenge style piece with three further stones.
With her love of necklaces it's not unusual to see Toyah wearing two at the same time, layering something understated with something longer and bolder. Our Seductive necklace is a dead ringer for one of Toyah's and she would probably wear this elegant circular pendant with something like our Reverso pendant, opting for her favourite stone, aquamarine. These two pieces lend themselves to layering as the Reverso pendant has a large loop at the top which complements the circle of the Seductive piece perfectly.
Although Toyah's birthstone is emerald, her mother was superstitious about the colour, so she developed a liking for aquamarine, a stone she wears every day in a ring given to her by her husband for their 27th wedding anniversary. Our aquamarine rings are both in a very classic, traditional style which isn't something Toyah favours, but she would definitely rock our bubble mount Vita studs and matching necklace.
It's no mystery that our Rainbow Cocktail ring would have a place in Toyah's jewellery box. Statement pieces are her thing, so bright colours, large stones and unusual shapes are certain to please. The Blue Lagoon ring, with its large emerald cut topaz would be ideal, and the Angelica ring with the feather motif and curving shape is also a likely favourite.
If you want to get Toyah's look, go bold with your clothing choices either in terms of prints or bright colours, and opt for statement jewellery. One or two statement pieces with more understated options is the way forward to make this a wearable style for every day, so match a bold necklace with a statement ring and wear simple studs, or go all in with the earrings and double necklaces while leaving the fingers relatively unadorned.
